POEMS ABOUT DARKNESS
AND THE DARKNESS SPOKE…
When darkness becomes too dark,
When you find yourself immersed in despair,
When hope disappears from your horizon,
When you feel suffocated, gasping for air,
When life on Earth becomes too painful,
And your hands grow numb from swimming upstream,
When the world you believed in, shatters into pieces,
And you stand in the ruins of your collapsed dream,
When God is too silent and your Critic too loud,
Big problems leave you lost without a clue,
And all you desire is to numb the pain,
Don’t fight your emotions. Let them carry you.
Let them carry you to the worst of the worst.
Look into the eyes of what scares you to death.
Surrender to shame, converse with your pain,
Let IT speak to you, listen to what IT says…
“I am your darkness, your shadow, your shame.
I am your wounds, your suffering, your fear.
But I’m NOT your enemy. I am also a GIFT,
That during this storm was anchored here.”
“Only for a moment, a second in eternity,
And I know you hate me as I am your wrath,
But as life’s hurricanes keep knocking you down,
Embrace me, and together, we’ll find the path.”
“We’ll place the blame where it truly belongs.
I am the bridge that connects to your past.
Don’t fear me, don’t numb me with distractions.
The longer you avoid me, the longer I last.”
“So while this storm rages, take me into your arms.
Don’t be afraid to hold me in your sweet caress.
We will walk the trails that will lead to healing.
By the next storm, you’ll be stronger,
and it will hurt less.”

"AND THE DARKNESS SPOKE…" was a life-changing poem for me. Allowing myself to confront the paralyzing fear of PTSD was incredibly difficult, but the revelation that followed was transformative. After facing it head-on, staying with it for a while, and giving it a voice, the fear finally stopped haunting me in nightmares, bringing a sense of relief. Most importantly, I was able to get out of that "frozen" stage and become productive again.
Of all the competitions I’ve ever entered, freeing myself from the claws of self-destruction was, by far, the greatest victory I ever achieved. —Liliana Kohann |
