POEMS ABOUT COPING WITH CHRONIC PAIN
My heart goes out to all of you who suffer from chronic pain. I know there are no words that can accurately describe what you are going through. I started this chapter because I want to honor you, and I want you to know that in my mind, you are all great heroes. Despite all your pain, you still get up, you still face life, and you still somehow find the strength to help others. I wrote the poem below after a serious accident. I had a couple of surgeries, and I was in intense pain. Chronic pain is horrible, yet it teaches us to approach life with a different perspective.
From this perspective
From this perspective
where I am now
I think of the world
different somehow
Things that I walked by
and didn’t see
seem so important
right now to me
All of my worries...
Clouds in my way...
Are not important
I look away
Behind the clouds
no matter how dark
I know there is
a sun with its spark
And if not today
then maybe tomorrow
I will see that spark
shining through my sorrow

Stillness, stay
Stillness, stay
I need your comforting depths
To sink into
To be weightlessly suspended
In the sea of your knowing.
Stillness, stay
Your unbiased whisper,
"It will be alright,"
Relaxes the upheaval
In my wounded, wandering
Heart.
Stillness, stay
Just a bit longer.
Let me soak,
Infusing my aching humanness
With your reason
Before I go.
