POEMS ABOUT GROWING OLDER > The Value of Silver
THE VALUE OF SILVER
If you are going to laugh because of her aging skin,
It will only show me what you’ve got within. If you’ll put her down because of her silver hair, It only will show me that your heart’s not there. If you will make fun out of her trembling hand, It will only show me that you can’t understand: The value of silver, The hands full of truth, The wisdom of wrinkles, And the passing of youth. I was in a store when I saw two young guys making fun of an older lady with a shaking hand. I felt so bad for her, so I jumped in, pretending to join their joke: ‘Yeah, aren’t you guys glad you’ll never get old?’ They just frowned, muttered something, and left. I probably didn’t have much impact on them. Behavior like that makes me think how distracting and useless it is. Oh, wait—not entirely useless! After all, they helped me write this poem, didn’t they? |
